Coinciding with the first ever Pride in Surrey event, Surrey Music is hugely excited and proud to announce the launch of Surrey Rainbow Choir, the first LGBTQ+ choir in Surrey.
The well-established community music society which champions local causes and has raised in excess of £200,000 for charitable purposes since its formation in 2005, is no stranger to forming successful choirs; it already comprises the 130-strong mixed voice Elmbridge Choir, and the 90-voice Elmbridge Ladies Choir.
“For several years I have wanted to form an LGBTQ+ choir here in Surrey, and with the recent groundswell of support for the LGBTQ+ community as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Stonewall, coupled with the first ever Pride in Surrey event taking place in August, I felt that there was never going to be a better time!” says Cliff van Tonder BCAa, Founder and CEO of Surrey Music.
“As an event sponsor and a Patron of Pride in Surrey, I have been so encouraged to see the positive response from the local community. Our choir members are really proud to be joining the Pride parade and performing on stage at the event and hope to sign up loads of new members for the Surrey Rainbow Choir. Anyone over 18 who identifies as LGBTQ+ (or ally) and who has a passion for singing, whether it’s a yearning to unleash their inner diva or simply a desire to find a safe space to express themselves and use their voice, this is the choir for them!”
Stephen Ireland, Founder of Pride in Surrey, is delighted with the news. “Having the support of Surrey Music means the world to me and the Pride in Surrey team. Hearing that a Rainbow Choir is on the cards demonstrates that Cliff understands the importance of celebrating diversity and inclusion, and also provides a safe space where someone can sing their heart out and be whoever they want to be.”
The new choir will rehearse weekly from Tuesday 8th October in Guildford. Singing a wide variety of songs, everything from iconic rock and pop anthems, 50s and 60s kitsch, 80s pops to contemporary hits and songs from the shows, the emphasis will be on having fun with like-minded people in a happy and supportive environment.
As well as singing members, Surrey Music is looking for an energetic and enthusiastic choir leader or musical director to be part of establishing and building the choir. Anyone interested in joining this brand new, friendly, non-audition and non-judgemental choir, either as a singer or a leader, can register their interest by visiting www.rainbowchoir.com or visit the Surrey Rainbow Choir stall at Pride in Surrey in Woking Park on Saturday 10th August to find out more.
